book synopsis/description:

Understanding and Counseling Sexual Minorities is a practical book aimed at courses for counselors and other mental health professionals in training. The book will serve as a practical guide and text for courses specifically aimed at working with GLBT clients and/or courses in multicultural counseling or sex therapy.

It will provide a historical and contemporary look at gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered clients from a variety of cultural perspectives. It will also provide empirically based counseling strategies and interventions for working with each group.

This book takes a unique cultural approach, as it will bring in personal case studies and narratives of a variety of individuals and cultures from around the globe. The book will contain various self-assessment tools and questionnaires that will aid students and practitioners in examining their own attitudes and beliefs and help challenge current assumptions. The research base is large and rapidly expanding and thus many books that are currently available for course use are sorely outdated.

Dr. Kevin Alderson is an associate professor of counselling psychology at the University of Calgary. His areas of research interest include human sexuality, gender studies, and LGBTI studies. Throughout his 26 years as a practicing psychologist, Dr. Alderson has counselled hundreds of clients with nondominant sexualities and gender variations.
