book synopsis/description:

Ali Ahmed continues his engagement with the themes of his previous two books, On War in South Asia and On Peace in South Asia (both CinnamonTeal 2014), specifically on issues related to India's strategic, military and nuclear doctrines. He takes his discussion of a Limited Nuclear War, broached in his book India's Doctrine Puzzle: Limiting War in South Asia (Routledge 2014) further.

National security issues such as India-Pakistan equations, Kashmir, the need for a grand strategy, and institutional pulls and pressures are covered. Forged in the liberal perspective, the opinion pieces, taken together, make the case that India's lurch towards the Right has had a negative impact on its national security. The dangers emerge from a rightist ideology overriding the strategic rationale.

In light of South Asia having two nuclear powers at odds with each other, the nuclear dangers stand accentuated. The book is, on this count, timely. National security hawks, doves, aficionados and minders, faculty and students of strategic and peace studies, the attentive and lay person, would all find it a stimulating read.
